ISCEV is continually re-evaluating its position in relation to advances in other fields.
We considered the scope of ISCEV for instance in 2006 and the minute from this meeting is shown below. The ISCEV Board received a letter on 16 October 2008, prior to the launch of this wiki site. Consequently we re-re-considered the topic and are now encouraging members to input their thoughts via this wiki. The letter and initial board discussions on this subject can be viewed here.

Minutes of the 2006 ISCEV Board Meeting (Fontevraud, France) ITEM 6:
ITEM 6 The future direction(s) of ISCEV: While recognising that ISCEV is a successful society as the international authority for standards, education, publication and scientific meetings in clinical electrophysiology of vision, a discussion about the scope of ISCEV and the future directions of the society was initiated. Two broad questions were addressed:
- a. Is the definition of ISCEV too restrictive and would expanding our scope remove constraints to growth of the society, promote broader interests and productive scientific developments?
- b. If the aims of ISCEV are to be expanded, what direction(s) do we want to take?
Discussion: We already have experts in many fields allied to clinical electrophysiology of vision, particularly in the vibrant and expanding fields of anatomical and functional imaging. On the other hand, ISCEV is good at what it does; too much expansion risks diluting the quality and identity of the society and putting it in direct competition with societies in related fields.
Summary: This initial discussion was brief, however, there was a general consensus that we should embrace opportunities to enlarge the scope of our symposia and our journal with special sessions and special issues focused on topics of rapid scientific growth. Both growth and stability are required for a vibrant scientific society and the Board will revisit the topic of our scope and future direction, taking its lead from the activities and interests of our members. A change of name to reflect a broader scope was discussed and rejected as premature at this time.
